Through them\, we can see their cares and interests and how the Revolution affected their daily lives – sometimes in subtle ways and sometimes profound. Yet all of them used writing to create meaning and connection in a deeply unsettled time. \nPlease join us as Dr. Marie McDaniel contextualizes several written materials from the Connecticut Museum’s American Revolution collection.  Dr. McDaniel was the 2025 Project Scholar for the American Revolution Papers Digitization Project at the Connecticut Museum. \nThis virtual event is free and open to the public. EPOCH is a public-facing initiative aimed at integrating research\, teaching\, and scholarship in broader public policy interventions and capacity-building for community organizations. Her teaching and research center African\, Caribbean\, African Diaspora histories. She is currently working on a book and digital humanities project\, Hartford Bound that integrates oral histories\, archival research\, and GIS methodologies to offer new visual and spatial histories of race\, ethnic belonging\, migration\, and community succession in Hartford\, Connecticut.

SUMMARY:Calligraphy that Inspired a Nation: Learn to Write like America’s Founders
DESCRIPTION:Who was the calligrapher that wrote the Declaration of Independence? How did they write during the American Revolution? What tools did they use? What lettering style? Can I write like they did? We will explore these questions and more in this hands-on 90-minute program with calligrapher Debby Reelitz. Participants will get the opportunity to write in script\, use a dip nib and ink\, and scribe a line from the Declaration of Independence. \nDebby Reelitz is a professional calligrapher in North Granby\, Connecticut. Introduced to calligraphy by her 5th grade teacher\, she dabbled for years until opening her own calligraphy studio in Chicago before moving to northern Connecticut. For more than 25 years\, she has been a professional lettering artist\, creating awards\, gifts\, commissions\, engraving\, chalkboards\, writing on walls\, teaching and much more. \nThis workshop will be structured for the beginner\, but all levels of expertise are encouraged to register! Zamanillo provides leadership and strategic direction for the museum and guides the museum’s comprehensive plan to preserve\, document\, display/interpret and promote knowledge of U.S. Latino history\, art and culture. Zamanillo and his team are also integrating and building on programs previously managed by the Smithsonian Latino Center and working on new museum collaborations\, digital resources\, exhibitions and fundraising. \nPreviously\, Zamanillo was the executive director and CEO of HistoryMiami Museum. SUMMARY:The Elegance and Style of Chinese Classical Dance: Introduction to Liyuan Dance with Kaili Chen
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an immersive dance workshop exploring the elegance and enduring style of Chinese Classical Dance\, taught by choreographer Kaili Chen\, founder and director of Li Garden Dance Company and a current SNEAP Mentor. \nIn this workshop\, participants will learn fundamental elements of Chinese classical dance\, including expressive hand gestures\, focused eye work and facial expression\, refined walking patterns\, and short movement combinations that highlight rhythm and flow. The session also introduces the historical background and distinctive aesthetics of Liyuan Dance\, a classical form rooted in Tang Dynasty (618–907 CE) court traditions. \nParticipants will also explore creativity through traditional face painting\, designing their own classical-inspired makeup details such as the mei xin (forehead ornament) and dimples. The workshop includes hands-on experience wearing Han-style costumes and using flowing silk scarves (pibo) to embody grace and everyday etiquette. \nBlending movement\, history\, fashion\, and self-expression\, this workshop invites participants to experience Chinese classical dance as both an art form and a way of life. \nWorkshop choreography is geared towards female participants ages 8 and up. Please wear a fitted top and pants. Light-colored socks required. \nArtist Bio: \nKaili Chen is the founder and director of Li Garden Dance Company\, a nonprofit organization established in 2017 in Stamford\, Connecticut. Dedicated to preserving and sharing traditional Chinese culture. \nOriginally from Taiwan\, she was a principal dancer and rehearsal director with the renowned Han-Tang Yuefu Music and Dance Ensemble in Taipei for over 30 years and trained extensively in Liyuan Classical Dance\, a court dance tradition originating in the Tang Dynasty (618–907 CE)\, and studied martial arts at the Shaolin Temple. Using inspiration from this historic event\, families can enjoy some classic fair fun at the Museum! With inspiration from the fair exhibits and car parades at this historic event\, families can create their own agricultural displays and design a miniature wooden car. Then meet some small animals\, try out popular carnival games\, and enjoy some classic fairground snacks. \n11:30am – 1:30pm: Dazzle Day Balloon Twisters\nGet a special piece of balloon art to take home! DESCRIPTION:Virtual Presentation!\nThe Connecticut Museum recently opened a new exhibition\, Drawn Here\,  that explores the migration history and culture of Hartford’s North End through a series of original graphic novels developed by local students and professional artists. \nJoin us for a virtual presentation as Orice Jenkins discusses one heroic resident of the North End. \nMary Jewel Barlow was one of only three members of the 6888th Postal Directory Battalion who died in service during World War II\, and one of only four women buried in the Normandy American Cemetery. Though erased from popular memory for decades\, her legacy connects directly to Hartford’s historic Clay Arsenal neighborhood and to one of Connecticut’s most prominent Black families. Genealogical research reveals Barlow not as a fictionalized figure from a movie\, but as a real young woman whose sacrifice deserves recognition. \nThis virtual event is free and open to the public.
