About the American Revolution Papers Digitization Project
The American Revolution Papers Digitization Project was planned in anticipation of the nation’s 250th anniversary, and will elevate, contextualize, and make more accessible a collection of nationally significant 18th‐century manuscript holdings in the Connecticut Museum of Culture and History’s collection that relate to the political, military, professional, personal, and cultural lives of Connecticut’s diverse population.
The outcome of the scholar project can include, but is not limited to, an article, presentation, program, or other source. Two expected presentations include a one-hour public virtual Lunch and Learn through our adult education department and a presentation to Museum staff describing findings in the collection.
The Connecticut Museum will retain the rights to created materials for future use. the Scholar may use research for future projects as long as the Museum’s resources are cited.
General Description
The Project Scholar will play an important role in the implementation of the American Revolution Papers Digitization Project. The incumbent will compile a scholarly work showing how Connecticut events and stories relate to the national and global context of the time-period. Scholars will identify documents that align with America250 themes and consult with the Connecticut Museum’s education staff to discuss focuses and recommend potential uses of documents. The Scholar will review current finding aids and collections in our manuscript collection related to the American Revolution.
Duties and Responsibilities
The incumbent’s specific duties will include, but not be limited to:
- Reviewing finding aids for accuracy and context;
- Identifying key manuscript materials that will contextualize Connecticut’s role in the American Revolution, both nationally and globally;
- Conducting research and writing on historical events and people included in archival collections;
- Working with staff to create and/or update adult and youth programming.
Qualifications:
- Ph.D. candidate, Ph.D. holder or equivalent, or an independent scholar;
- Ability to explain complex historical and cultural concepts to non-academic audiences;
- Exceptional attention to detail;
- Flexibility and excellent time management skills;
- Excellent organizational skills, as well as a proven ability to keep accurate and detailed records;
- Excellent writing and editing skills;
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with a variety of staff;
- Exhibit proven reliability and trustworthiness;
- Positive demeanor
- Knowledge of people and events that took place during the American Revolution is required.
Compensation
This is a temporary/seasonal W-2 position with a gross compensation total of $11,500 over an 8-week period falling within June 1 to August 31, 2025. Housing and transportation are not included.
Schedule
Full time for the season. Monday through Friday, mainly on-site in Hartford, CT.
Research will be available onsite or hybrid with a minimum of three days onsite per week. Onsite research will be held in the Edgar F. Waterman Research Center. Offsite research
will offer manuscript images through CT Digital Archive.
