Accessibility at the Museum

On Site

Physical Access

Accessible entrance, located to the left of the main entrance.

There are four handicap parking spaces available, located at the front of the building.

The Museum is wheelchair accessible via the auditorium wing of the building. There is a wheelchair lift connecting this wing to the main building. The accessible entrance is located to the left of the main entrance. Upon arrival at the accessible entrance, visitors can speak with welcome desk personnel via a callbox. Museum staff will be available to unlock the door and assist with operating the lift. 

Elevator access is available for all exhibitions. 

An accessible restroom with a child-sized changing table is located on the first floor by the Welcome Desk.

Access for Hearing Impaired and Visually Impaired

Labels:
The Connecticut Museum has worked closely with the American School for the Deaf to provide select labels in our exhibitions that are accessible in American Sign Language. Labels are available for the Tavern Signs and the Making Connecticut exhibitions. Please bring your smartphone or tablet in order to access these labels using a QR code and/or website listed on the label.
 

ASL and Closed Captioning:
Upon request, the Connecticut Museum can provide ASL interpretation for on-site programs and Closed Captioning for virtual programs.
ASL Interpretation or Closed Captioning must be requested as least two weeks in advance. Please email ktamburrino@connecticutmuseum.org to make arrangements.

CRISAccess Audio:
The Connecticut Museum has partnered with Connecticut Radio Information Systems to provide smartphone audio tours for visitors with difficulties accessing printed information. There are 10 audio stops located in the 
Making Connecticut exhibition, and 4 audio stops located in the Tavern Signs exhibition. These stops include signs with QR codes. Audio tours are available in both English and Spanish.

Magnifying Glasses:
For the visually impaired, magnifying glasses are available to check out at the Welcome Desk, and may be used for the duration of your visit. Magnifying glasses must be returned to the Welcome Desk at the end of your visit.
 

Neurodiverse Visitors

A clear backpack filled with sensory friendly items; red noise-reducing headphones, fidget toys, a stress ball, sunglasses, and family-friendly Museum information packet.

Sensory bags, available at the Welcome Desk.

The Connecticut Museum has sensory bags available upon request for individuals with sensory sensitivities. These bags include noise-reducing headphones and sunglasses, for both children and adults, fidget tools, sand timers, and a copy of a social story (in both English and Spanish) designed for a family visit to the Museum. To borrow a bag, simply request it at the welcome desk. Website Accessibility

You can find the accessibility options for our website by clicking the accessibility icon at the bottom right of your screen, visible on both desktop and mobile. The majority of our website is screen-reader-friendly, and all future updates to the website, including a copy of our digital magazine, will incorporate additional screen-reader features.  

Virtual Exhibitions

If you are unable to visit an exhibition in person, our Virtual Exhibitions webpage allows you to access our exhibitions online. Virtual exhibitions are available for our two permanent galleries, as well as a growing number of our temporary exhibitions.
