The Connecticut Historical Society Partners with Hartford Food System, Bringing a Mobile Market to New Neighborhoods
HARTFORD, CT – The Connecticut Historical Society (CHS) has a new partnership with Hartford Food System to serve as a weekly location for their Mobile Market program. Each Tuesday now through March 2021, from 11am – 12pm, the Mobile Market will be on-site at 1 Elizabeth Street, Hartford, which is located on the western edge of the Asylum Hill Neighborhood.
Hartford Food System’s Mobile Market brings fresh fruits and vegetables, and pantry staples into areas with limited healthy food access. In addition to providing a source of locally and regionally grown produce for food insecure communities, the Hartford Mobile Market also provides a new market for local farmers since many of the fruits and vegetables sold over the course of the year on the mobile market are sourced locally.
This partnership means fulfilling the CHS’s mission in a new way. Ilene Frank, Chief Curator at the CHS explains, “the Connecticut Museum of Culture and History not only reflects our past but engages with the present. Recognizing our community’s need for access to culturally relevant food and being located on a major street (Asylum), close to bus lines, and to the Asylum Hill and West End neighborhoods, makes our location ideal for this kind of community service.”
Shana Smith, Market Program Coordinator of Hartford Food System reiterates the importance of food access especially during this time. “The pandemic has increased food insecurity and the Hartford Mobile Market provides the option for Hartford residents to purchase high-quality affordable produce in their neighborhoods.”
The Mobile Market doubles SNAP dollars, and accepts cash and debit cards. They also accept Farmers Market Nutrition Program checks during the summer and fall months.
The Connecticut Historical Society (www.CHS.org) is a privately funded, independent, not-for-profit educational organization that includes a museum, library, the Edgar F. Waterman Research Center, and the Connecticut Cultural Heritage Arts Program. Founded in 1825, the CHS is Connecticut’s statewide historical society, and a Smithsonian Affiliate. At the CHS, we cultivate understanding of the history and culture of Connecticut, and its role in the United States and the world. Through our collections, research, educational programs, and exhibitions we reflect the past, actively engage with the present, and innovate for the future.
