Bicentennial Celebration of President James Monroe’s Tour of the Northern States

June 23, 2017 @ 9:00 am - 5:00 pm

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every day that begins at 9:00 am, repeating until June 24, 2017

Celebrate the 200th anniversary of President James Monroe’s visit to Hartford!

During the summer of 1817, President James Monroe went on a “Tour of Inspection” through the Northern States and stopped to visit Hartford on June 23rd.  During his visit he met students at the American School for the Deaf.  Monroe’s “old-fashioned” bicorn hat became the inspiration for the American Sign Language sign for “president.”  Celebrate this historic visit and drop-in to make your own paper “bicorn hat!”
