ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
The Declaration of Independence is turning 250 years old. It was created as a statement of Britain’s abuses and America’s right to self-governance. It became an enduring call to action.
Rebellious reflects on moments throughout Connecticut history when its residents pursued their own visions of the nation’s founding ideals, often by challenging the systems, structures, and perceptions that limited their liberty, equality, and happiness. Informed by the Museum’s rich collections, Rebellious unites compelling Connecticut stories at local, state, and national levels.
WHAT TO EXPECT

Discover the stories of residents across Connecticut from the American Revolution to present day through the objects, photos, documents, and oral histories they used and created, such as:
- A powder horn used by a Connecticut soldier when the British attacked New London and Groton
- An outfit worn during a march on Washington in support of the Equal Rights Amendment
- Items from a laundry business run by Chinese immigrants in Bridgeport
As you explore, reflect on America’s founding and the Declaration’s enduring call to action through interactive stations throughout the exhibition.
