Growers of Color: Travis Stewart
Farm with Me: Gardening for Health
Travis Stewart, a Jamaican resident of Hartford’s South End, discovered the therapeutic power of gardening during his battle with multiple myeloma. Cultivating peppers, tomatoes, garlic, and even raising chickens and tilapia in his backyard brought him strength and hope. Travis now encourages everyone to try their hand at growing something, no matter their space limitations, through community gardens and reimagined backyards.
Through Farm with Me LLC, Travis offers consultations to home gardeners and leads educational workshops to help people as they deepen their understanding of farming.
Travis also regularly shares his own farming journey and encourages people to connect with one another in the Farm with Me LLC – Urban Farming group!
Growers of Color was made possible through the support of the Connecticut Cultural Fund, the Connecticut Office of the Arts/DECD, and the National Endowment for the Arts. Special thanks to Mike Keo, who initiated this project.
